NC forms three-member task force to elect parliamentary party leader

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee (CWC) on Sunday has formed a three-member task force to select the parliamentary party (PP) leader.

The task force will be led by Chinkaji Shrestha. The other two members of the  task force are Raj Joshi and Bishma Raj Angdembe. The meeting was held at the NC party central office in Sanepa.

“The task force will make utmost efforts to choose the parliamentary party leader unanimously. But if leaders fail to forge consensus on PP leader, the task force will pick a date for the election of PP leader,” said party Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma.

NC Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prakashman Singh are set to vie for the position of PP leader. Singh belongs to Ramchandra Poudel-led faction.

The CWC meeting has also approved the NC federal parliamentary party statute . The statute was unanimously approved with some revisions by the parliamentary party meeting on Saturday.

The NC is preparing to elect the PP leader before the first meeting of federal parliament scheduled for March 5.

Meanwhile, students associated with NC-sister wing, Nepal Student Union staged protest outside of NC party office demanding the party be run as per the statute and democratically. The students have also demanded end of factionalism in the party.

The demonstrating students had worn black glass as symbolic protest against the factionalism in the party.
